Summer...Week One

Sitting at Emma's swim team practice tonight, a few parents expressed their jealousy over Jeff and I not having to go to work for a couple of months. After this first week off, Jeff and I might disagree- parenting and entertaining your kids is tough work!

This summer we are working on reading with our kids everyday. This means actually finding time in our busy schedule to sit down and read with them. So far, we are doing well. The kids entered the Bemis Library reading contest where for every six hours of reading, they earn free books from the library. They also can can win special prizes. With each level accomplished, they move up a level. Jackson is really into the Hardy Boys mystery series, Emma is reading Mr. Popper's Penguins, and Will is working on reading his first chapter book.

Additionally, we always like to keep summer as relaxing as possible while maintaining some semblence of structure- the structure is more for my personal sanity. So far we have gone to a Rockies game, been swimming a couple of times at the pool, and today, made stilts. I remember at my grandparents home in Devils Lake having a pair of stilts that Matt, Keith, Adam and I would walk on. After purchasing all the necessary materials yesterday, Jeff put the stilts together today with assistance from Jackson and Emma. Of course, I had to take a whirl as well. Here Jackson is showing of his skills and I am trying not to hurt myself.

Will finished up tennis camp this week. He had a great time and really enjoyed when they were able to play matches. Luckily, his tennis fun doesn't end this week- he has tennis lessons a couple of times a week starting next week.

Emma started swim team this week. This year we are backing off the 6 day a week committment and focusing on Emma having fun at swimming. So far so good. Only 8 weeks to go!

Jeff and I have Memorial Day weekend free from kids- which will be good because I fell asleep yesterday at the pool with them because they are so energetic thus exhausting. We are planning on finishing up my training for the Steamboat Half Marathon next weekend, and then getting ready to pace Bryan Krause, our cousin, in his pursuit of an ultramarathon finish. Saturday night, Jeff and I are running at night, with Bryan and Shelley, to get a feel for what it will be like for us to pace Bryan through the night. This will be interesting.

Rockies and Dentist

Last night I had to go to the dentist to get my teeth clean and a filling refilled. I was not scared at all, in fact I was happy and cheerful. Then I went to the Rockies game and all of my family was there. It was my Nana's birthday. They lost 5-2 to the Diamondbacks. My family was bummed. I was too. We got home at 10. All were tired.

Children's Hospital

Last night, we were ALL able to go and visit the Leclaires at the Children's Hospital to check in on baby Sam. Jackson, Will and Emma haven't been able to see much of Kristin and Jason because of their second home happens to be at a hospital, but last night we brought BBQ chicken, rolls, salad, fruit, and cookie bars for dessert. It was great to be able to hug, laugh and get some updates on what is going on with Sam. Also, as my mom says "it was good to lay eyes on them."

See the Leclaires blog for updates on Sam. Today is a big day for him!

From Emma:

You know how tough Sam is, but right now he needs lots of prayers. So always think of Sam! Remember how others feel when you're hurt!

In the beginning...

EASTER 2011

Many have encouraged that I jump into the blogging world not for educational use( see class blogs and personal blogs for that), but instead for others to keep track of our family. Since our dear friends the Holmans are moving to bigger places, I thought I would give family blogging a shot this summer. I am sure to wrangle in Jeff, Jackson, and Emma to post, but maybe Will might want to participate as well with a little help from me.

We can all hardly wait for summer to roll in. At school, we are finishing up at the end of this week with finals and teachers return on Monday to check out. Right now, Jeff is training to help his cousin Bryan run an ultra-marathon in Wyoming in June. He is also going to be the assistant cross country coach so that will entail a lot of running and training time this summer. Jackson is going to be an active kid this summer with track, a nature camp and a science camp- he is going to run with the AHS kids this summer too. Watch out high schoolers, this kid will show you up. Emma starts competitive swimming this coming Monday with meets every Saturday through June and July. Will will be swimming and playing tennis. For me, I am training to run a half marathon in June in Steamboat with one of my best buddies Anne Thurmond (a.k.a. AT). Then, I will also be pacing Bryan at his race in Wyoming.

We are planning a couple of trips. One, we are going on vacation with the Thurmond clan this summer to Anne's family cabin in Nebraska. In July, Jeff and I are taking the boys camping for a few days. Finally, at the end of summer, we are heading home to relax at my parent's home in Minnesota. I can hardly wait!

Here's one last picture of our last family dinner with all our best friends. We are sad the Holmans are moving, but know this is the right decision for their family. We will miss you James, Lisa and the DR (Danielle Roze). Lisa- realize this blog is for you :)
